Volunteer Archaeologist, HALMYRIS | Murighiol, Romania | July 2 - July 27, 2012
Originally a Geto-Dacian settlement, then later a Greek colony, Halmyris was a Roman fort, harbor, trading post and civil settlement by the 1st century AD, and has an occupation history of 11 centuries. Excavated area of the harbor (both civilian and military). Dug two trenches approximately 100 cm deep. Finds included bone, countless pottery shards, floor tiles, stone wall, North African pottery, Roman coins, blades, glass, fish weights, instruments made from bone, various amphorae, a dolium (large storage vessel). Halmyris falls under the auspices of the Romanian Ministry of Culture and the Romische-Germanische Zentral Kommision (Mainz, Germany).
